Sustainable drinking water supply with low-tech-water filters which are locally produced by the locals themselves.

The Problem

Currently we are mainly working in Kajiado County in the South of Kenya. The majority of the local population suffers from severe poverty, malnutrition, unemployment, an insufficient infrastructure and high food prices. Due to a lack of alternatives they obtain their drinking water untreated from bacterially contaminated rivers. Children suffer the most from this situation. Diseases like typhoid or cholera not only often prevent school attendance, but alos often lead to death.

The Solution

We use so-called Biosand-filters which are very well adapted to the needs of the target group. Biosand-filters are an adaptation of the traditional slow sand filter which has been used in various fields of water purification for more than 200 years. This is perfectly suitable for home usage in rural areas but can be adapted to larger scales in line with demand. The filter’s effectiveness has already been investigated in long-term studies. Furthermore, we produce it ecologically friendly and sustainably.

Sustainability is our top priority. For this reason we train our local partners in filter construction and development of distribution channels. This happens by intensive workshops, know-how-transfer as well as trainings. Altogether we achieve an economic growth in the prevailing target region with this concept and we open up new prospects for our entrepreneurs. On site, we are also constantly working on alternative financing opportunities, partnerships and collaborations with health centers to make the filters accessible to everyone.

The Results

» supply of more than 29,115 people with clean drinking water
» production of 281 household filters altogether
» equipping of 50 schools with (large) filters
» containment of life-threatening diseases
» several times awarded concept
» build up a production and storage place on site
» continuous research in the fields of mechanical engineering, civil engineering, social work and business studies at the OTH Regensburg
(12 completed theses)
